Crustworthy?

The search for the ultimate slice.

Whilst Chicken stack offers students a quick and close by lunch time deal by being located on campus next to the student union, I have ranked this establishment last in our slice review. The introduction of the new pizza flatbreads sparked my attention for just £2.75 and therefore had to be included in this review. Whilst the options for flavours include hot honey and pesto and mozzarella gives classic and authentic Italian flavours, compared to the freshly made pizza parlours in town, the flavours, dough and presentation were just not as good. However, the accessibility and cheap nature of these flatbreads demonstrates the benefits.

Ranking at number four is Slice, located in Grainger market within the food court. With a crispy base and rich tomato sauce, this pizza place is worth a visit. Right near Bigg Market, ‘Slice’ is open 9:30am until 4:30pm so would be ideal for a bite on your lunchbreak. However, make sure you hit a cash point first as ‘Slice’ is cash only, so don’t be tricked out in to thinking you can use apple pay.

Firestone

Next on the list is ‘Firestone’, a previous favourite of mine in my first year of university. ‘Firestone’ is located just outside of Haymarket metro station which aligns with the top of Northumberland Street. You can see freshly made pizzas being created to produce the amazing selection of New York style pizza flavours and toppings. Whilst ‘Firestone’ do have money-saving lunch deals, most of the time, pizza slices start at £3.50, which leaves this pizza parlour in the middle price range. Enjoy pizza whenever the time suits you the best as Firestone is open till late.

Dough Daze

Ridley Place

At a close second for the ultimately prize of slice wars is ‘Dough Daze’, an extremely popular, especially over the lunchtime period, pizza parlour located on Ridley Place just off Northumberland Street. This is the home of the £2.50 pizza slice and £7 12” pizzas which is undeniably an absolute bargain. With the retro interior, designed like a New York pizzeria and the funky street music, it is a must for pizza lovers to try. I made no mistake in trying the hot honey pepperoni which left me with a sweet and tangy flavour. With a great location and price range, ‘Dough Daze’ is the ideal place for a student study break.

Square

‘Square’, which is located just a five-minute walk from Northumberland Street, on 1 Market St is open from lunchtime till the late evening. Whilst in the pricier section of this review with individual slices pricing at £4-6, Square holds the crown at my personal favourite. A Detroit style slice and pie menu, Square creates many of the most unique and exciting pizza flavours alongside succulent sides such as cheesy garlic bread and waffle fries. I personally tried the classic red top which consisted of a three-cheese house blend, slow cooked red sauce, basil oil and whipped ricotta flowers. However, the best part about it was the thick and crispy crust. Whilst this pizza parlour is on the more expensive side, the quality of the food is totally worth it.
